An Off-Grid Paradise
An Off-Grid Paradise
I am a descendant of the 1620 Mayflower voyage and Plymouth Plantation. My ancestors came to the New World wilderness to work the land as settlers and farmers, and to hunt and fish wild-game free from religious oppression and tyranny. My Seneca Native American ancestors controlled most of the Shenandoah Valley following the Beaver Wars, then later sold their land rights to the Virginia Colony. Land and property ownership has always been an important part of what it means to be an American.
Today, the United States is experiencing a housing shortage and affordability crisis, forcing many would-be home owners to live in sub-par properties or stay with extended family members. The current housing market affordability crisis is a political result of the 2008-2009 housing market recession and crisis. Many politicians in Washington D.C. believed if housing unit supply was artificially kept low or tight, then they could avoid another 2008-style housing market crisis. Consequently, with housing unit supply kept low, house prices remained extremely elevated for the past decade. The current housing market situation played a very important role in the Republican Red-Wave that swept America last week in the 2024 General Elections, with former President Donald Trump retaking the White House.
However, there are large swaths of land here in America considered Off-Grid. There are varying definitions of Off-Grid properties. Broadly speaking, off-grid properties do not have wireless cell phone coverage, also know as a cell phone dead zone, and usually does not have any kind of high-speed internet directly to the property. These off-grid properties cannot be used for commercial purposes, severely limiting the property’s economic potential. There are various technologies that can be “cobbled together” to provide such services, but they do not improve the property, and do not increase the value and price. Any realtor who doubles the asking price of a house and property simply because they place a satellite dish on the roof is trying to rob you. Any banking who provides a loan for a property at an inflated price because it has a satellite dish on the roof will not be a banker very long.
I am a Microsoft Certified Windows Programmer. Most of my PC work meets or exceeds U.S. Government and Military standards. With my Windows PC and laptop I can live off-grid fairly comfortably without any additional technology. Verizon was reportedly offered more than a trillion dollars to solve the “last mile problem” to bring high-speed internet to remote mountains and rural areas. Verizon responded by stating it was not nearly enough money. However, being a Microsoft Certified Windows Programmer the off-grid property can potentially be a paradise.
Like my great and noble ancestors before me, I can live fairly comfortably in these off-grid properties, making the vast American wilderness available for habitation. By the time the politicians of Washington D.C. finally figure out what they want to do with the housing market, I will have my off-grid land and property paid for and be ready for retirement.
