 Science, Technology, and Society Studies

A popular, and growing, field of study is in the area of Science, Technology, and Society, or STS for short. STS examines the impact and effect of science and technology on individuals, groups, and in some instances, Nations and the Globe. Many of these various technologies are utilized on a global scale, and impacts many of the current 8.2 billion Earthly inhabitants.

I am a Microsoft Certified Windows Programmer. Microsoft, a more than $3.5 trillion company, is considered by most to be the most valuable company on Earth. Microsoft has more than 1.6 billion active Windows Devices, worldwide. Today’s $2,000 Windows PC has 40X(times) the computing capability of an $8 million supercomputer of the late 1970’s. Microsoft is celebrating its 50th year of successful business this year, empowering individuals, schools, and businesses alike. Most of my PC work meets, or exceeds, U.S. Government / Military standards. Personal Computers are now essential devices for work, school, e-commerce, entertainment, communications, and much more.

There are three areas I focus most of my personal research and attention, as it relates to STS. These three areas are what I call: a University-in-a-Box, a Church-in-a-Box, and Wall-Street-in-a-Box. These three areas have been significantly effected by advances in Personal Computers, the Internet, and other related technologies.

It cannot be overstated the cost-savings of doing an online college degree program, compared to the costs of attending a traditional on-campus college. On average, the total cost of obtaining an online college degree is about half the total cost of a traditional on-campus college degree program. The cost-savings of doing an online degree program makes professional services of various kinds in rural areas much more economically viable. Furthermore, online college degree programs solves the centuries-old debate between trade-skills and formal college. Today, a person need not choose between the two. A person can now do both; earn an online college degree while learning a trade-skill.

I was raised in a Baptist Church as a Preacher's Kid, and I have a B.A. Philosophy from Virginia Tech. I regularly watch Joel Osteen Lakewood Church online live church services. I, recently, had the privilege of using my Windows PC to attend a live-online broadcast Sunday Mass of the newly elected Pope Leo XIV from Vatican City in Rome, while here in Virginia. Similarly, I was able to participate online with the Summer Solstice Sunrise at Stonehenge in England, a 4,500 year old celebration. Participating in these online live events, in any way, was inconceivable when I was younger, and is only made possible with modern Windows PC’s and the Internet.

I, also, hold a B.S. Business Economics from Virginia Tech. It is now possible to do almost everything a small brokerage firm, or any Wall Street financial advisory firm, can do right from the comfort of your home office on your Windows PC. Modern Personal Computers and Internet technology can turn any rural Main Street into a Wall Street-like financial powerhouse, with e-commerce and online trading. Additionally, you can now do advanced Commodities Trading while never leaving the farm or ranch.

To conclude, Science, Technology, and Society Studies has many different aspects. My particular areas of focus is how modern Personal Computers and Internet technologies have changed and transformed college education, church and religion, business and online trading, and individual peoples’ lives. The impact and importance of these technologies on these institutions will only increase as time goes on.
